Spectrogram

A physical polling technique where participants position themselves along a line in the room based on their degree of agreement with a statement. One end = strongly agree, the other = strongly disagree. Similar to Constellation but specifically focused on agreement/disagreement spectrums. It makes the distribution of opinion in a group instantly and dramatically visible.

  1. 1

Clear floor space and identify or tape a line from one end to the other.

  2. 2

Label the ends: 'Strongly Agree' and 'Strongly Disagree'.

  3. 3

Read a statement. Participants move to position on the spectrum (30 seconds).

  4. 4

Once positioned, invite people at different points to explain their position (1–2 minutes).

  5. 5

After hearing others, ask: 'Would anyone like to move?'

  6. 6

Read the next statement and repeat.

Conseils

  • Include a few statements where the group is likely to be divided — unanimous consensus reveals nothing.

  • 'Would anyone like to move?' after hearing others models intellectual openness without pressure.

  • Works with any group size if the room is large enough.

Variantes

Run seated with a show-of-hands gradient for less mobile groups. Anonymise by having everyone close eyes and walk to their position simultaneously.
