Common Ground

A lively physical exercise where the facilitator reads out a statement and anyone it applies to stands up (or steps forward, or raises a hand). Participants discover shared experiences and traits across apparent differences. It builds connection, creates energy, and surfaces surprising commonalities.

Cómo ejecutarlo

  1. 1

Have participants stand in a circle with enough space to step forward.

  2. 2

Explain: 'I'll read statements. If it applies to you, step forward (or stand up). Look around to see who else stepped forward. Then step back.'

  3. 3

Read a series of statements ranging from lighthearted to more meaningful: 'Step forward if you've lived in more than one country', 'if you speak more than one language', 'if you've changed career direction', 'if you felt nervous coming here today.'

  4. 4

Pause briefly after each statement to let people see who's with them.

  5. 5

After 10–15 statements, debrief: 'What surprised you? What did you notice?'

Consejos

  • Mix fun/easy statements with meaningful ones — start light and build depth gradually.

  • Avoid statements that could single out or embarrass individuals.

  • The facilitator should participate and step forward themselves when true.

Variaciones

Run seated with hand raises for less mobile groups. Use for values alignment: 'Step forward if fairness is a core value for you at work.' Run anonymously for sensitive topics.
