Timeline Retrospective

A retrospective technique that reconstructs the shared history of a team or project on a visual timeline. Participants add events, milestones, emotions, and learnings at the points when they happened. This builds a collective memory, surfaces patterns, and creates shared understanding — especially useful for longer projects or new team members joining mid-way.

  1. 1

Draw a horizontal timeline on a long surface covering the period to be reviewed (e.g. a quarter or a project).

  2. 2

Mark key dates and milestones you already know (releases, incidents, team changes).

  3. 3

Give participants two colours of sticky notes: one for facts/events, one for emotions/feelings.

  4. 4

Participants add their notes to the timeline where events occurred (10 minutes).

  5. 5

Walk the timeline together, discussing what the group placed and how they felt at different moments.

  6. 6

Look for patterns: where were there spikes of stress? What caused the high-points?

  7. 7

Use insights to generate action items for the future.

Conseils

  • For long projects (6+ months), use a physical roll of paper on the floor — it creates a powerful spatial experience.

  • Emotional notes (the second colour) often spark the richest conversations.

Variantes

Combine with a happiness line — participants draw a curve above or below the timeline to show team morale over time. Add a 'decision' layer to capture key choices made.
