  1. 1

Present the statements based on the literature the participants have read.

  2. 2

Divide participants into two groups: one supporting the statement and the other opposing it. Ideally, assign students to groups contrary to their usual viewpoints. Select about five participants to serve as the jury.

  3. 3

Allow time for each group to prepare their arguments and discuss their viewpoints on the literature. Each group should formulate as many supporting arguments as possible and anticipate counterarguments.

  4. 4

Instruct the jury to focus on the rhetorical structure of both groups' arguments, prior to the debate, identifying different types of arguments from the readings. They should also prepare a brief summary of the articles' conclusions to introduce the debate.

  5. 5

Kick off the debate, managing time effectively throughout.

  6. 6

During the debate, the jury analyzes the nature of the arguments and decides on a winner.

Conseils

  • Encourage participants to truly step into the shoes of the perspective they are defending for a deeper understanding.

  • Remind the jury to remain objective and focus on evaluating the arguments rather than expressing personal opinions.

  • Facilitate a debriefing session after the debate to discuss insights and reflections.

Variantes

You can adapt the method by including a written component where students submit their arguments in advance. This allows for deeper reflection.
