Personal SWOT

An adaptation of the classic SWOT framework for personal or professional development. Applied to an individual rather than an organisation: Strengths (what am I naturally good at?), Weaknesses (where do I hold myself back?), Opportunities (what external possibilities could I leverage?), Threats (what external factors could hinder me?). Powerful as a self-assessment before career conversations, development planning, or leadership transitions.

How to run it

  1. 1

Distribute a SWOT template with four quadrants.

  2. 2

Participants complete each quadrant individually and honestly (15 minutes).

  3. 3

Strengths: specific skills, traits, and experiences that differentiate you.

  4. 4

Weaknesses: honest gaps, limiting beliefs, or development areas.

  5. 5

Opportunities: market trends, relationships, or circumstances you could leverage.

  6. 6

Threats: competition, skill gaps becoming obsolete, personal patterns that risk derailment.

  7. 7

Share in pairs: give and receive feedback on blind spots.

  8. 8

Identify 1–2 strategic priorities based on the analysis.

Tips

  • Encourage specificity — 'good communicator' is too vague.

  • The Weaknesses quadrant is where people pull their punches most.

  • Consider asking trusted colleagues to fill in a SWOT about you and compare it with your self-assessment.

Variations

Run a 'Personal SWOT Speed Round' in pairs — each person completes the other's SWOT based on what they know, then compare. Use as a 360-feedback discussion starter.
