Constellation

A physical voting and perspective-taking exercise. A statement is read out and participants position themselves in the room on an invisible spectrum — one wall means 'strongly agree', the opposite means 'strongly disagree', the middle means neutral. Participants see where others stand, creating an instant visual map of group opinion. Moving bodies beats raising hands for engagement.

Comment l'animer

  1. 1

Clear enough floor space for the group to move freely.

  2. 2

Designate two opposite walls or ends of the room as 'Strongly Agree' and 'Strongly Disagree'.

  3. 3

Read a statement aloud. Ask participants to position themselves along the spectrum.

  4. 4

Once positioned, invite a few people — especially those at extremes or in surprising positions — to explain their placement.

  5. 5

Ask: 'Would anyone like to move after hearing what others said?'

  6. 6

Read the next statement and repeat.

Conseils

  • Use statements that are genuinely ambiguous or likely to divide the group — consensus on everything produces no learning.

  • After hearing others' reasoning, allow movement; this models open-mindedness.

  • Keep statements clear and concrete.

Variantes

Run as a 2D constellation: two axes create four quadrants, and participants position themselves in the 2D space (great for mapping values or priorities). Use for anonymous voting: everyone moves with eyes closed.
