How to run it

  1. 1

Start with a clear invitation for participants to explore a shared future using fictional objects.

  2. 2

Gather a maximum of 12 participants around a table, ideally splitting into groups of 4.

  3. 3

Provide a selection of 'time-travelled' objects that are unfamiliar or creatively repurposed.

  4. 4

Set out prototyping materials such as scissors, glue, and colored paper for participants to craft their ideas.

  5. 5

Give sticky notes and markers for labeling each object brainstormed.

  6. 6

Use pen and paper for note-taking after sharing the fictional objects.

  7. 7

For larger groups, prepare a flip chart to collect and display insights collaboratively.

Tips

  • Encourage open-mindedness and playful thinking; remind participants there are no wrong ideas.

  • Facilitate group discussions to dive deeper into the meanings and possibilities of each envisioned object.

  • Make sure to create a safe space where all participants feel comfortable sharing their imaginative ideas.

Variations

This method can be adapted by focusing on specific themes, like sustainability or technology, to guide the fictional objects participants create.
