How to run it

  1. 1

Invite participants to create a map of their network, listing current and desired connections.

  2. 2

Set up a large wall space with tapestry paper and provide colored Post-it notes and markers.

  3. 3

Create a legend for key groups and assign colors or symbols to each.

  4. 4

Each member writes their name on a Post-it and places it centrally on the wall.

  5. 5

Participants add Post-its for people they know who are active in the work, arranging them by degrees of separation.

  6. 6

Brainstorm additional people to include and expand the map, creating a web with core and peripheral structures.

  7. 7

Draw connecting lines to illustrate influence, expertise, and potential blockages.

  8. 8

Devise strategies to invite new participants, navigate blockages, and enhance progress.

Tips

  • Encourage participants to think ambitiously about future connections, focusing on small, actionable groups.

  • Avoid overcomplicating the map by limiting the number of distinct groups in the legend.

  • Regularly update the map to reflect changes in the network.

Variations

Revisit the network map periodically to track growth and changes. Use digital tools for more detailed mapping and analysis. Combine webbing sessions with follow-up actions using methods like 15% Solutions or Design StoryBoards.
