How to run it

  1. 1

Set up a large, flat whiteboard or wall space for the activity.

  2. 2

Distribute sticky notes and index cards to all participants.

  3. 3

Ask participants to spend 1-2 minutes writing down abstract words or phrases they find challenging to visualize, one per index card.

  4. 4

Collect all index cards, shuffle them, and select one card to read aloud to the group.

  5. 5

Have participants spend 2-3 minutes drawing a visual representation of the word on a sticky note.

  6. 6

Participants then place their sticky notes under the corresponding index card on the wall.

  7. 7

Repeat the process until most words have been visualized.

  8. 8

Conclude with a group discussion on the visual interpretations and their implications.

Tips

  • Encourage participants to think beyond literal interpretations and explore metaphors or symbolic imagery.

  • Ensure that everyone feels comfortable sharing their visual ideas without judgment.

  • Use this exercise to highlight the diversity of thought and creativity within the group.

Variations

Consider using digital tools for remote teams to create and share their visualizations. Alternatively, focus on a specific theme, such as 'innovation' or 'collaboration,' to guide the choice of words.
