Generative Relationships STAR
The Generative Relationships STAR method helps groups diagnose and improve their relational dynamics, fostering more effective collaboration. Using the STAR compass, participants assess their team across four attributes: Separateness, Tuning, Action, and Reason. This method is ideal for enhancing team performance and self-management by identifying and acting on relationship patterns.
How to run it
- 1
Invite participants to evaluate their team using the STAR compass: Separateness, Tuning, Action, and Reason.
- 2
Provide each participant with a STAR compass graphic and pen for individual assessment.
- 3
Have participants place a dot along each compass point to represent their assessment.
- 4
In small groups, discuss the assessments, seeking consensus and noting differences.
- 5
Identify the types of results generated by current interaction patterns.
- 6
Brainstorm action steps within small groups to enhance weak elements.
- 7
Convene as a whole group to compile action steps and decide on immediate next steps.
Tips
Encourage an open dialogue without assigning blame to individuals.
Focus on the patterns of interaction rather than individual assessments.
Ensure each participant leaves with a clear action item and understanding of their role in the group's improvement.
Variations
For virtual settings, use a digital whiteboard for participants to place their STAR assessments. Consider creating a 'synthesizer' role to facilitate virtual discussions. Combine with other Liberating Structures to address specific low points in the STAR assessment.
