Force Field Analysis

Force Field Analysis is a structured method for evaluating the factors that drive or hinder a proposed change within an organization. This method is ideal for teams looking to comprehensively assess the feasibility of a strategic change by identifying and weighing supporting and opposing forces.

Duration
30m–2h
Group size
5–30 people
Materials
Large sheet of paper or whiteboard, Sticky notes, Markers

How to run it

  1. 1

Draw a representation of the proposed change in the center of a large sheet of paper or whiteboard, clearly labeling it.

  2. 2

Write 'Forces FOR Change' on the top left and 'Forces AGAINST Change' on the top right, with arrows pointing towards the center.

  3. 3

Invite participants to brainstorm and write down drivers and barriers to the change on sticky notes, spending 5–10 minutes on each.

  4. 4

Ask participants to assign a weight from 1 to 5 on each sticky note to indicate the strength of the force.

  5. 5

Collect and display the sticky notes for forces FOR change, categorizing them into clusters based on similarities.

  6. 6

Assign a category name for each cluster and calculate the average weight for each cluster.

  7. 7

Repeat the clustering and categorization process for forces AGAINST change.

  8. 8

Sum the weights for and against the change, and discuss the implications based on the totals with the group.

Tips

  • Encourage open discussion by balancing the focus on both supporting and opposing forces.

  • Be mindful of dominant voices and ensure all perspectives are considered.

  • Use the numeric scores as a discussion guide, not as definitive answers.

Variations

Consider exploring meta-categories like 'politics' or 'economics' for deeper insights. This can help the group focus on broader themes that might influence the change.
