Elevator Pitch

The Elevator Pitch method helps groups succinctly articulate the essence of a product, service, or idea. It's ideal for defining a unique value proposition by identifying the target customer, their needs, and the key benefits of your offering.

Duration
2h
Group size
1+ people
Materials
flipcharts, sticky notes, markers

How to run it

  1. 1

Start by writing key questions on flipcharts: Who is the target customer? What is the customer need? What is the product name? What is the market category? What is the key benefit? Who is the competition? What is the unique differentiator?

  2. 2

In the generating phase, participants brainstorm and write ideas on sticky notes, placing them under the appropriate headers on the flipcharts.

  3. 3

Discuss and prioritize ideas using techniques like dot voting or affinity mapping.

  4. 4

In the forming phase, break into smaller groups or work individually to draft elevator pitches using the brainstormed ideas.

  5. 5

Reconvene to present drafts, role-play as target customers, and provide feedback.

  6. 6

Refine pitches based on feedback until a strong direction is agreed upon.

Tips

  • Encourage open brainstorming during the generating phase to capture a wide range of ideas.

  • Use prioritization techniques to focus on the most promising concepts.

  • Avoid seeking a perfect pitch in a large group; instead, aim for a clear direction and refine further in smaller groups.

Variations

Consider creating multiple pitches for different target audiences to tailor the message effectively. You can also adapt the method for virtual environments using digital collaboration tools.
