Check-Out Round

A structured closing ritual where each participant briefly shares a takeaway, reflection, or commitment before the session ends. It creates a meaningful close, reinforces learning, and ensures everyone leaves with clarity on next steps. A good check-out is as important as a good check-in.

How to run it

  1. 1

Signal the end of the working session with 5–10 minutes remaining.

  2. 2

Go around the group. Each person shares one of: a key takeaway, something they'll do differently, one word that captures the session, or an appreciation for a fellow participant.

  3. 3

No discussion or commentary from others during the round.

  4. 4

The facilitator closes with a brief synthesis and any logistical next steps.

  5. 5

    Thank the group.

Tips

  • Keep it to one thing per person — a check-out that becomes a second full discussion is a facilitation failure.

  • For longer programmes, alternate the prompt across sessions: takeaway today, commitment tomorrow, appreciation next time.

Variations

Run a 'Written Check-Out' on sticky notes — posted on the way out the door. For remote sessions, use the chat for simultaneous written responses. Combine with a brief energy-level rating on a 1–5 scale.
